How to Clean Up and Remove Duplicator Pro

This guide will walk you through the steps to remove existing backup packages created by the Duplicator Pro plugin, and then safely disable and remove the plugin, freeing up significant disk space on your hosting account.

Step 1: Locate and Delete Existing Backup Packages

The first step is to remove the large backup files (called “Packages”) the plugin has already created.

  1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.

  2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Duplicator (or Duplicator Pro).

  3. Click on Packages.
    – You will see a list of all your created backup packages. These include an archive file (usually a .zip) and an installer script.

  4. For each package listed:
    – Check the box next to the package name.
    – Select the Delete option from the Bulk Actions drop-down menu above the list.
    – Click Apply and confirm the action to permanently delete the package files from your server.

Why this is important: Duplicator packages are massive, often containing both the installer and the archive file, making them a huge drain on your disk space. Deleting them now is crucial for freeing up room.

Step 2: Deactivate the Plugin

Now that you’ve cleaned up the files, you need to turn the plugin off so it doesn’t create new backups.

  1. Go to Plugins in your WordPress Dashboard menu.

  2. Select Installed Plugins.

  3. Scroll down to the Duplicator Pro plugin.

  4. Click the Deactivate link underneath the plugin name.

Step 3: Delete the Plugin Completely

If you aren’t using the plugin for migrations and will rely on WP Sparks for backups, the best practice is to remove it entirely. Duplicator Pro has an excellent option for a clean removal:

  1. Before Deleting: Go to Duplicator Pro > Settings > General.

  2. Scroll down and look for an option to delete plugin settings and/or delete the entire storage directory upon uninstallation (the exact label may vary by version). Check this box. This ensures a much cleaner removal.

  3. Go back to Plugins > Installed Plugins.

  4. The plugin will now have an Activate and Delete link.

  5. Click the Delete link.

  6. Confirm you want to delete the plugin.
